What it does
The adapter flange is the piece that carries the transition between the filter port and the plumbing bolted to it. It takes the mechanical load of the connection and it has to stay flat and true for the o-ring behind it to seal.
Why it is replaced
Flanges crack, warp with heat, or get pulled out of shape by someone chasing a leak with a wrench. Once the sealing face is no longer flat, the joint weeps and tightening it further only makes the distortion worse. The o-rings that go with it, the flange adapter o-ring and the pair of spacer o-rings, are separate parts and worth replacing at the same time.
