Why a filter needs a diffuser
Water arriving in a sand tank comes in fast and concentrated. The diffuser takes that stream and spreads it across the top of the bed so the whole surface does the filtering. Take the diffuser away, or break it, and the incoming jet cuts a channel down through the sand. Water then runs through the channel instead of through the media, and the filter returns dirty water while the pressure gauge looks perfectly normal.
Worth doing properly
Getting to the diffuser means opening the tank, which is the awkward part of the job rather than the fitting itself. Since the tank is already open, look at the laterals and the hub at the same time. Those parts have similar service lives and finding a second fault after you have closed the filter back up is a frustrating way to spend a weekend.
Check the model number on your tank label before ordering. The Triton family spans several sizes and the internals are not interchangeable across them.
