The Pentair 154856Z is the 8-1/2 in. buttress thread closure kit for Triton II and Triton C-3 side mount sand filters. It is the genuine Pentair part, also listed under the older number 154856.

Which filters

Triton II models TR40, TR50, TR60, TR100 and TR140, and the commercial TR100C, TR140C and TR100C-3.

When it is needed

The closure is the large threaded fitting that seals the top of the tank. When it weeps under pressure, cracks from over tightening or the threads strip, a new closure kit is the fix. Pentair makes a plastic wrench for the 8.5 in. closure, and a little o-ring lubricant on the seal helps it seat.

Before you order

Check that your closure is 8-1/2 in. with buttress threads. The smaller 6 in. closures come in both V thread and buttress thread versions and are different kits.

Is 154856Z the same part as 154856?
Yes. The Z suffix is the current Pentair number for the same closure kit.
How do I tell buttress thread from V thread?
Buttress threads have a flat, square looking profile on the closure. If your closure has fine V shaped threads and measures 6 in., you need the 6 in. V thread kit instead.
Do I need a special tool to remove the old closure?
Pentair sells a plastic wrench for the 8.5 in. Triton closure. It makes removal and retightening much easier and avoids damaging the threads.
