What it holds
The ring nut is what clamps the motor to the wet end of the pump. Everything behind it depends on that joint being drawn up properly, so a ring that is cracked, stripped or missing its ratchet is not something to work around.
The thread
The inside of the ring carries a buttress thread, an asymmetric form built to hold load in one direction.
