Why primer matters
Solvent welding is not gluing. The primer softens the surface of the pipe and the inside of the fitting so that the cement can fuse the two into a single piece of plastic. A joint made without primer may hold pressure on the day and separate months later, which on pool plumbing means a buried leak.
Clear or purple
Clear primer is the choice when the pipework will be on show, at an equipment pad or anywhere above ground. The trade off is that an inspector cannot see at a glance that primer was used, and some jurisdictions require tinted primer for that reason, so check your local code before using clear on inspected work.
