Why a union is there
Unions are what make pool equipment serviceable. Without one, taking a piece of equipment out of the line means cutting pipe and gluing it back afterwards. With one, the nut backs off and the component lifts out. That convenience is worth keeping in good order.
When to replace it
Union nuts are a known wear point. Years of sun, seasonal expansion and over tightening leave hairline cracks that open under pressure, and a scored tail piece face will weep no matter how hard the nut is pulled up. Replacing the pair is the fix; more torque is not.
