Why two speeds

Low speed handles circulation and filtration, which is most of the hours a spa pump runs, and it does that quietly and on far less power. High speed is there for the jets. The speed is selected by the spa pack, timer or two speed switch on the system, so the pump needs a control that can call for both.

Can this pump run on 115 volts?

No. It is the 230 volt version. Check what the existing pump is wired for before you order, since the supply cannot simply be changed at the pump.

What does 48 frame mean?

It is the motor frame size, which sets the mounting and shaft dimensions. Match it against the pump you are replacing so the wet end and the mounting line up.

How do the two speeds get controlled?

A two speed pump needs a two speed switch, timer or spa pack to select the speed. It will not change speed on its own.
