Product details

Proteam Alkalinity Up raises total alkalinity in pool water and comes in a 25 lb container. It is a water balancing chemical, not a sanitizer.

What it fixes

Total alkalinity is the buffer that keeps pH from wandering. When alkalinity falls, pH swings on every rainstorm, every chemical addition and every busy weekend, and chasing it with acid or soda ash becomes a losing game. Bringing alkalinity back into range steadies the whole picture.

Target ranges

Proteam lists total alkalinity of 125 to 150 ppm for vinyl and fiberglass pools. Their guidance for plaster and similar surfaces is stated as calcium hardness of 100 to 150 ppm, so read the container instructions alongside your own test results before dosing a plaster pool.

Why it protects equipment

Water held in balance is far less likely to turn corrosive or to start dropping scale. Both extremes cost money, one by eating at surfaces, fittings and heater internals, the other by coating them. Keeping alkalinity in range is the cheapest part of avoiding either.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

What does raising alkalinity actually do?
Total alkalinity buffers the water. When it sits in range, pH stops moving every time you add sanitizer, rain falls or bathers get in.
What total alkalinity should I aim for?
Proteam gives 125 to 150 ppm for vinyl and fiberglass pools. Their guidance for plaster and similar surfaces is written in terms of calcium hardness at 100 to 150 ppm, so follow your own test kit and the container instructions for a plaster pool.
Can I use it in an above ground pool?
Yes. It is listed for above ground and in ground pools, residential and commercial.
Why does low alkalinity matter if my pH tests fine today?
Low alkalinity means nothing is holding that pH in place. Water with no buffer can drift acidic and start attacking surfaces, fittings and heater internals between tests.
