Proteam Alkalinity Up raises total alkalinity in pool water and comes here in a 5 lb size. It is a water balancing chemical, not a sanitizer.

What it fixes

Total alkalinity is what keeps pH from wandering. When alkalinity drops, pH moves on every rainstorm, every chemical addition and every busy weekend, and chasing that pH with acid or soda ash becomes a weekly job. Bring alkalinity back into range and the pH tends to sit still on its own.

Why it protects the pool

Water that has gone acidic attacks plaster, grout, metal fittings and heater internals. Water that has gone the other way lays down scale on surfaces and inside the heater. Alkalinity in range is what keeps the water between those two failure modes.

Targets

Proteam gives 125 to 150 ppm total alkalinity for vinyl and fiberglass pools. Test first, dose to the container instructions, then retest before adding more.

What does raising total alkalinity do?

Alkalinity is the buffer in the water. Once it is in range, pH stops swinging on every rainfall, chemical addition and busy afternoon.

What should I be aiming for?

Proteam gives 125 to 150 ppm total alkalinity for vinyl and fiberglass pools. Their line for plaster and similar surfaces is written in terms of calcium hardness at 100 to 150 ppm, so for a plaster pool follow your own test kit and the container instructions.

Can I use it in an above ground pool?

Yes. It is listed for above ground and in ground pools, residential and commercial.

My pH tests fine, so why bother?

Low alkalinity means nothing is holding that pH in place. Unbuffered water can drift acidic between tests and start working on surfaces, fittings and heater internals.
