Product details

The AquaStar WAV18WR102 is an 18 in. square suction outlet assembly in black: a mud frame carrying four 9 in. square Wave anti-entrapment covers on vented riser rings. It is certified, listed and labeled to ANSI/APSP/ICC-16 2017 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 50.

What is included

The 18 in. square mud frame, four vented riser rings, four 9 in. Wave square drain covers, a drop-in clip and sixteen 10 x 1-3/4 in. flat head Phillips screws in 316 stainless steel. The parts are made from UV-resistant engineered polymers. The assembly measures 20-1/4 in. square overall and has 176.8 sq in. of open area. A VGBA compliance button on the covers identifies them as VGBA 2017 compliant from the deck or underwater.

Flow ratings

The rating depends on how the sump is plumbed. For a floor outlet with the pipe leaving the bottom of the sump at a minimum depth of 3 in., AquaStar rates it at 126 GPM on 1.5 in. pipe, 150 GPM on 2 in., 200 GPM on 2.5 in., 250 GPM on 3 in., 398 GPM on 4 in. and 600 GPM on 6 in. or 8 in. pipe. A side exit pipe earns the same rating but needs a deeper pipe, from 5.5 in. to 8.4 in. depending on size. Wall outlets are rated from 200 GPM on 2.5 in. pipe up to 600 GPM. If the pipe size changes within 16 in. of the pool finish, go by the smaller pipe, and never exceed the rating while the pool is in use.

Fit and upkeep

AquaStar designed this assembly to replace standard 18 in. square 2 x 2 grid cover assemblies with four 9 in. square covers, 8-1/4 in. center to center screw holes and 3/4 in. deep existing frames, and lists it for concrete pools. It is rated unblockable, so AquaStar requires no second drain or SVRS with it, though local codes can add rules of their own. Replace the drain covers every five years from the date of installation.

What flow rating does it carry?
It depends on the pipe size and where the pipe leaves the sump. On the floor with a bottom pipe at least 3 in. deep, AquaStar rates it at 126 GPM on 1.5 in. pipe, 150 GPM on 2 in., 200 GPM on 2.5 in., 250 GPM on 3 in., 398 GPM on 4 in. and 600 GPM on 6 in. or 8 in. pipe. Side exit pipes carry the same ratings at greater minimum depths, and wall installs are rated from 200 GPM on 2.5 in. pipe. Never exceed the rating while the pool is in use.
Will it replace my old 2 x 2 grid drain cover?
AquaStar designed it to replace standard 18 in. square 2 x 2 grid cover assemblies that use four 9 in. square covers, with 8-1/4 in. center to center screw holes and 3/4 in. deep existing frames. Measure your screw spacing before ordering.
Do I need a second drain or an SVRS with it?
AquaStar lists this assembly as unblockable, with no second drain or SVRS required. Local codes can add rules of their own, so check with the inspector for your pool.
