What it is for
A return is the fitting that puts filtered water back into the pool, and where that water is aimed decides how well the pool circulates. Almost every pool has a spot the flow never reaches, usually a corner, the far end of a bench or the space under the steps, and that is exactly where fine debris settles and algae takes hold. A diverter plate turns the return flow so the current sweeps those areas instead of running straight down the middle.
