The Hayward SPX1420A1 is the rubber flow director that fits inside a 1 inch eyeball return fitting. It is the genuine Hayward part.
What it does
The director sets the direction and shape of the water coming out of a return. Aiming returns is how circulation is controlled: point them well and the whole pool turns over, point them badly and water stalls in the corners where debris and algae then settle. The rubber body flexes to the angle you set and stays there.
Fitting it
Shut the pump down and wait for flow to stop. Loosen the locking ring, remove the eyeball fitting, then push the director into the return from behind until it pops into place. Refit the eyeball, tighten the ring and start the pump to check the aim before you walk away.

If the eyeball itself is also worn, the same director is available as an assembly with a 1 inch eyeball return nozzle.
