What it does
The flame sensor rod sits in the burner flame and tells the heater control that ignition succeeded. Without that signal the control assumes the burner never lit and closes the gas valve as a safety measure. The result an owner sees is a heater that fires, runs for a few seconds, and then shuts itself down again.
When to replace it
A rod that is heavily oxidized, cracked at the ceramic, or no longer producing a reliable signal after cleaning is due for replacement. The hot surface ignitor for the Legacy LRZE is a separate part, and many techs change both while the burner tray is open.
