When to replace it
A nut that is cracked, cross threaded or will not draw down evenly weeps at the joint no matter how hard you tighten it, and overtightening a damaged nut usually splits it further. Changing the nut and the flange as a pair puts fresh sealing faces on both sides of the connection.
