What the control does
The temperature control is what the heater reads to decide whether to fire. Set a temperature and the control holds it, cycling the heater as the water drifts away from the setpoint. When it drifts out of calibration or stops responding, the heater either will not reach temperature or will not shut off at the right point.
Before you order
Rule out the wiring and the rest of the control circuit first, since those faults look the same from the outside. The on/off switch and the temperature control knob are separate Laars parts if only one of those is damaged.
