Where it goes

The gasket sits between flange faces at the heater connection and is what actually makes the seal when the bolts are tightened. The metal faces do not seal against each other; the gasket does.

When to replace it

Fit a new gasket any time the flange is opened. A used gasket has already taken a set from heat and compression, and reusing it is the usual reason a joint weeps after a service that otherwise went fine.
