Where it goes

The header bolts to the heat exchanger through a flanged joint, and this gasket is what seals that joint. It is a part you meet whenever the header comes off, whether that is to clear scale, to change a header itself, or to chase a leak. Because the joint sits directly above the burner tray, a slow weep here does more damage than its size suggests, so it is worth sealing properly the first time.
