What the switch does
Before a gas heater is allowed to light, something has to confirm that the blower is really moving air. That is the air pressure switch. It senses the pressure the blower develops and closes a contact to tell the control board it is safe to proceed. No switch closure, no ignition.
The symptoms
A failed pressure switch usually shows up as a heater that will not fire at all, or one that starts its ignition sequence and locks out part way through. Worth knowing: the switch is often perfectly good and is reporting a genuine airflow problem, such as a blocked vent or a tired blower. Check the air path before you condemn the switch.
