The Raypak 600892B is the 135 deg F hi-limit control, a high limit automatic gas shut-off in a red epoxy body. It is the genuine Raypak part.
What it protects against
The hi-limit is a safety control, not a comfort one. It reads the temperature of the water on its way out of the heater, and if that water climbs past the rating on the control it cuts the gas. That is what stands between a heater with a flow problem and a heat exchanger boiled dry. The rating is stamped into the part for a reason, so a replacement must match: fitting a higher rated control removes the protection you are paying for.

What does a hi-limit control do?
It watches the temperature of the water leaving the heater and shuts the gas off automatically if that temperature goes past its rating. It is a safety device, not a thermostat.
