What it does

The adapter is the fitting that carries the digital sensor into the heater water path. It has to seal and it has to hold the sensor at the right depth, because everything the control board decides about firing and shutting down starts with what that sensor reports.

No. This is the adapter only. The temperature sensor is a separate Raypak part.

When would I need to replace the adapter rather than the sensor?
When the adapter itself is damaged, corroded or the threads are stripped. If the heater is reading temperature wrongly but the adapter is sound, the sensor is the more likely culprit.
