Product details

The Raypak 018006F is the ProTek Shield adapter retrofit kit, a module that protects the heat exchanger of a Raypak digital gas pool and spa heater from corrosion.

How it works

The copper heat exchanger is the most expensive component in a gas heater and the one most exposed to aggressive water. The ProTek Shield is built to corrode in its place. Chlorinated and salt water attack the module first, and the exchanger behind it survives longer. The shield eroding is not a fault, it is the intended behavior.

The retrofit

Raypak now fits the ProTek Shield to all of its heater models. This kit is how a heater built before that change gains the same protection. The module is compact, so it goes in without reworking the plumbing around the heater.

Worth doing on salt pools

Salt water pools put the harshest conditions on a heat exchanger. If a heater is running on a salt pool and does not already have a shield, this kit is one of the cheapest pieces of insurance available for it.

What does the ProTek Shield actually do?
It is a sacrificial module. Corrosion attacks the shield instead of the copper heat exchanger, which is the expensive part of the heater.
Is it safe on a salt pool?
Yes. Raypak lists it as suitable for chlorinated and salt water pools, and salt water is exactly the condition it was designed for.
The shield is eroding, is that a fault?
No. Erosion is how it works. A shield that is wearing away is a shield that is protecting the exchanger.
Do I need this if my heater is new?
The ProTek Shield is now included on all Raypak heater models. This kit is the retrofit for an older heater that was built before it became standard.
