Why the plug matters

The return header holds water whenever the heater is plumbed in. In a climate that freezes, that water has to come out before winter, and this plug is how it comes out. A heat exchanger that was never drained is one of the most expensive ways to learn the lesson.

Why they get replaced

A plug that is removed and refitted every autumn takes abuse. Threads pick up scale, the head gets rounded by a worn wrench, and eventually it stops sealing. A drain that weeps sends water straight down onto the burner tray and the controls below, so it is worth changing rather than nursing along.
