Why the heater needs it
Once the burner lights, the control has to be told the flame is really there before it will hold the gas valve open. The sense rod does that. It sits in the flame and passes a small current that the control reads as proof of ignition. Lose that signal and the control shuts the heater down, because the alternative is gas flowing with nothing burning.
The symptom to look for
A heater that ignites, runs for a handful of seconds, then drops out and goes to lockout is the classic flame sensing failure. Sometimes the rod is simply coated and can be cleaned, but a rod that has failed or been cleaned too many times is due for replacement.
