The Teledyne Laars R0387000 is the flame sense rod for LX and LT Low NOx pool heaters. It is the genuine Laars replacement part.

Why the heater needs it

Once the burner lights, the control has to be told the flame is really there before it will hold the gas valve open. The sense rod does that. It sits in the flame and passes a small current that the control reads as proof of ignition. Lose that signal and the control shuts the heater down, because the alternative is gas flowing with nothing burning.

The symptom to look for

A heater that ignites, runs for a handful of seconds, then drops out and goes to lockout is the classic flame sensing failure. Sometimes the rod is simply coated and can be cleaned, but a rod that has failed or been cleaned too many times is due for replacement. Check that yours is the Low NOx version of the LX or LT before ordering, since the earlier models use different parts.

What does a flame sense rod actually do?
It sits in the burner flame and reports back to the control that the burner is alight. Without that confirmation the control shuts the gas off as a safety measure.
My heater lights then shuts off after a few seconds. Is this the part?
That pattern points at flame sensing. The rod either has failed or has built up a coating that blocks the signal, so the control assumes no flame and shuts down.
Is this the same as an igniter?
No. The igniter lights the burner and the sense rod confirms it lit. They are separate parts and either can fail on its own.
Which heaters does R0387000 suit?
The Laars LX and LT Low NOx models. Check your heater is the Low NOx version before ordering.
