What the flame sensor does
The sensor is how the heater proves to itself that the burner has actually lit. If the control cannot see flame within its trial period, it shuts the gas valve and locks out. That is a safety design, not a fault, which is why a sensor that has fouled or failed produces a heater that fires briefly and then quits.
