What it monitors
The stack flue sensor sits in the exhaust path and reads the temperature of the gas leaving the heat exchanger. The control board uses that reading as a safety input. If the sensor drifts, opens or shorts, the heater stops trusting the reading and shuts the burner down rather than running blind.
When to replace it
A heater that locks out on a stack or flue sensor fault, or that will not complete an ignition sequence, is the usual reason this part gets ordered. Check the fault code in the ETi400 manual before you buy, because other sensors on the heater can produce a similar lockout.
