The Pentair 42001-0107S is the dual voltage transformer kit for the Sta-Rite Max-E-Therm and Pentair MasterTemp heater electrical system. It is rated 115/230V, so one part covers a heater wired either way.

What the transformer does

The heater runs its controls on a low voltage circuit, and the transformer is what supplies it. When the transformer fails, the incoming power is still there but nothing on the panel wakes up, which is why a heater that appears completely dead is often a transformer rather than anything in the gas train.
