Product details
This is the genuine Waterway 711-6020 gasket for the 2.5 inch heater union. It is the flat seal that sits between the two halves of the union, and it is what actually makes the joint watertight when the nut is tightened.
Why a union leaks
A union does not seal on its threads. The nut simply pulls the two faces together and squeezes the gasket between them. That gasket spends its life compressed, warm and wet, and over a few seasons it hardens and takes the shape it was squeezed into. When that happens it can no longer close the gap, and the joint drips. Tightening harder is the natural response and the wrong one, because it distorts the nut and the seating face without improving the seal.
Fitting
Drain the line, back the union nut off, and lift the old gasket out of its seat. Clean any grit or old debris off both faces, drop the new gasket in flat, and tighten the nut by hand. Do not add tape or thread paste, which belongs on threaded pipe joints and not on a union.
Before you order
Check the size. This is the 2.5 inch gasket, and a 2 inch union takes a different part.
