Why the union matters

The unions are what let a heater come out of the plumbing without a saw. Every service that pulls the heater breaks those joints and remakes them, and the nut and its seal take that abuse. A cracked nut or a tired seal turns into a drip at the heater the moment the system comes back up to pressure.

Split nut

A split nut comes apart around the pipe rather than sliding along it, which is what makes it possible to work on a heater that is boxed in by rigid plumbing. It is the reason the design is used at heater connections rather than a plain threaded union.
