Product details

Coates 22003820 is the high temperature limit switch used on Coates electric pool and spa heaters. It is the overtemperature safety device, not the operating thermostat.

What it is for

An electric heater puts a great deal of energy into a small volume of water. If flow drops or the control fails, that water can climb far past the set point. The limit switch is the independent cutout that opens under those conditions and takes the heater offline before anything is damaged.

When to replace it

Two symptoms point here. A heater that trips off repeatedly for no obvious reason can have a limit switch that has drifted and now opens early. A heater that will not start at all can have one that has failed open. Before changing it, confirm the heater actually has good flow, because genuine low flow will trip a perfectly healthy switch and the switch is doing its job when it does.

What does the limit switch actually do?

It is the overtemperature safety. If water in the heater goes above the switch point, the limit switch opens and cuts the heater rather than letting it keep firing.

Is this the same as the thermostat?

No. The thermostat controls the temperature you set. The limit switch sits behind it as a safety cutout and only acts when something has gone wrong.

My heater keeps shutting off, is this the part?
