The Coates 12406ST is an ST Series electric spa heater rated at 5.5 kW, or 18772 BTUH, on a 240 volt single phase supply.

Electrical

The heater draws 23 amps, takes a 30 amp maximum breaker and is wired with 10 AWG. That is a dedicated circuit, and it is the item worth pricing before the heater, because the run from the panel is often the larger part of an electric heater install.

Plumbing and flow

Water connections are 1-1/2 inch by 2 inch unions for PVC pipe, so the heater unions off the line for service rather than being cut out. The rated flow range is 15 to 80 gpm, which covers the pump sizes normally found on a spa or small pool.

Size

The cabinet is 4 inch wide, 14 inch deep and 17-1/2 inch high. A gas heater of comparable duty needs a flue, combustion air and a gas run. This one needs a circuit and two unions, which is why electric is the usual answer on tight equipment pads and indoor spa rooms.
