Quick overview

  • Coates part 23000105 The factory flow switch ordered by manufacturer part number.
  • Model Q-12DS50 The half inch flow switch used on Coates heaters.
  • Half inch connection A 1/2 in flow switch, so it goes into the port it was sized for.
  • A safety device The flow switch is what tells the heater there is water moving through it. Without that proof the heater should not fire at all.
  • Common no heat cause A heater that will not start when everything else looks right often has a failed or stuck flow switch.
  • Never bypass it Jumping a flow switch to get heat lets the heater run dry, which is how heat exchangers get destroyed.

Product details

The Coates 23000105 is the half inch flow switch, model Q-12DS50, used on Coates pool heaters.

Why the heater needs it

A flow switch is a safety interlock. It closes only when water is genuinely moving through the heater, and the control uses that as a condition of firing. That single signal is what stops the heater from putting heat into water that is not going anywhere.

When it is the fault

A heater that refuses to start with a running pump, a clean filter and open valves is a classic failed flow switch. The switch either sticks open, so the heater never sees flow, or the paddle and contacts wear until they no longer make reliably.

One thing not to do

Do not jumper the switch to force the heater on. That takes away the only thing preventing the heater from running dry, and a heat exchanger fired without flow does not survive long.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

What is the model number?
Q-12DS50. The Coates part number is 23000105.
What does a flow switch do?
It confirms that water is actually moving through the heater. The heater uses that signal as a condition of firing, so it cannot heat a static column of water.
My heater will not fire. Could this be it?
It is a common cause. If the pump is running and the filter is clean but the heater never starts, a stuck or failed flow switch is one of the first parts to test.
Can I just bypass the switch to get heat?
No. Bypassing it removes the protection that stops the heater running without flow, and running dry is what destroys a heat exchanger.
