The Raypak 001811F is the genuine OEM hi-limit switch for Raypak pool heaters. It is a thermodisc type, DPST, with screw terminals and surface mounting, set to open at 121 degrees F and rated 50 amp at 240V.
What it protects against
The hi-limit is not the thermostat. It sits behind the thermostat as a safety cutout, and its only job is to break the circuit if heater temperature climbs past its setpoint. That is what stops a heater from cooking itself when flow drops or a control fails.
When the switch trips repeatedly
A hi-limit that keeps opening is often working correctly and telling you something else is wrong. Low flow is the usual cause: a clogged filter, a blocked skimmer or pump basket, a partly closed valve, or a pump too small for the plumbing. A failed thermostat that will not stop calling for heat produces the same symptom. Diagnose the cause before replacing the switch, and never jumper the hi-limit to keep the heater running.
Replacement
Kill power to the heater at the breaker before touching the switch. The screw terminals and surface mount make the swap straightforward, but the wiring must go back exactly as it came off.
