Why a split nut
Union nuts crack. On a heater that has been overtightened, or on old plastic that has spent years in the sun, the nut is usually the first thing to give. A standard replacement nut has to slide over the end of the pipe, which on an installed heater often means cutting the plumbing apart to get it on. A split nut is made in two halves instead: it closes around the pipe where it sits and the supplied screws pull it together.
Fitting
Clean the pipe and the union o-ring seat before the nut goes on, then draw the halves together evenly with the screws. Tighten the union itself by hand once the nut is assembled. Unions seal on the o-ring, and reaching for a wrench is what breaks the next one.
