Quick overview

  • Genuine Jandy Factory part R0386900, the ignitor specified for these heaters.
  • Low NOx models Built for the Low NOx version of the LX and LT heaters, which is a different ignitor from the standard LX/LT part.
  • Hot surface ignition The element heats until it glows and lights the gas directly, so there is no standing pilot to relight.
  • First suspect on a no light fault A heater that calls for heat, runs its blower and then locks out often has a failed ignitor.
  • Pairs with the flame sense rod The flame sensor for these heaters is a separate part, and both are worth inspecting on the same visit.
  • Handle by the base Ignitor elements are brittle. Touching or knocking the element is the quickest way to break a new one.

Product details

The Jandy R0386900 is the hot surface ignitor for the LX and LT Low NOx pool heaters. It is the genuine part for those models.

What it does

A hot surface ignitor takes the place of a standing pilot. When the heater calls for heat, current runs through the element until it glows, and the gas lights off that glowing surface. Nothing burns between cycles, which is why these heaters do not need relighting after a windy night.

When to replace it

The classic symptom is a heater that starts its sequence, runs the blower, and then locks out without ever lighting. Ignitor elements crack and burn out with age and thermal cycling, and once the element is open the heater has no way to light. The flame sense rod is a separate part on these heaters, so a unit that does light and then immediately shuts down is usually pointing at the sensor rather than the ignitor.

Fitting note

Confirm your heater is the Low NOx model, since the standard LX/LT ignitor is a different part number. Handle the new ignitor by its base. The element is brittle and easy to crack before it ever gets power.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

Which heaters does this fit?
The Jandy LX and LT Low NOx heaters. It is listed as the Laars LX/LT Low NOx ignitor.
Is this the same as the standard LX/LT ignitor?
No. The standard LX/LT ignitor is a separate part number, so confirm whether your heater is the Low NOx model before ordering.
How does a hot surface ignitor work?
Current runs through the element until it glows hot enough to light the gas as the valve opens. There is no pilot flame kept burning between cycles.
Do I need the flame sense rod too?
It is a separate part. The ignitor lights the gas and the flame rod proves the flame, so if the heater lights and then shuts down, the sensor is the more likely fault.
