The Lochinvar EnergyRite ERL202-A-8009 is a commercial grade ASME pool heater rated at 200,000 BTU on propane, Lochinvar part 100143163, built with a cupro nickel heat exchanger.

Why cupro nickel

A copper heat exchanger is fine on a well balanced residential pool. Commercial water, high bather loads and chemistry that swings out of range are harder on it. Cupro nickel holds up better under that duty, which is why it is the specification on heaters expected to run long hours for years.

Fuel and siting

This is the propane model. Propane and natural gas are not interchangeable, so confirm what is actually at the tank or the meter before ordering. The heater is listed for indoor and outdoor installation and is rated for elevations from 0 to 4,000 feet. Gas piping, venting and combustion air belong with a licensed gas fitter working to local code.

Controls

Ignition is electronic, so there is no standing pilot to keep alight through the off season or relight after a windy night.

What fuel does it burn?

Propane. This is the 200,000 BTU propane model and it is not a natural gas heater, so confirm the fuel at the tank or the meter before you order.

Can it be installed indoors?

It is listed for indoor and outdoor installation. An indoor install still needs venting and combustion air worked out to code, which is a job for a licensed gas fitter.

What is the elevation rating?

0 to 4,000 feet. Treat that as a hard limit. Above 4,000 feet this model is outside its rating, so check with Lochinvar for the correct heater for the site.

Why a cupro nickel heat exchanger?

Cupro nickel stands up better than plain copper to aggressive water chemistry and long run hours, which is why it is the usual specification on commercial and heavily used pools.
