What goes wrong
The diverter is what routes water to filter, backwash, waste or recirculate. Its o-ring is under constant pressure and constant movement, and over the years it hardens, flattens or tears. Once that happens the diverter no longer seals cleanly against the valve body, and water crosses over to a port it should not reach.
While you are in there
This is the diverter o-ring only. The cover o-ring, the plug and gasket assembly and the valve spring are separate items, and it is common practice to replace the soft parts together rather than open the valve twice.
