When to change it
Water weeping from the joint where the valve meets the tank is the classic sign. The o-ring hardens and takes a set over years of pressure and chlorine, and it will not reseal once it has. Fit a new one any time the valve is lifted off the tank, and put a thin film of silicone lubricant on it before the valve goes back down.
