This is the Sta-Rite 14965-0006 valve spring for the 1-1/2 inch top mount multiport valve fitted to Cristal-Flo and Waterford filters, model WC112-148.
What the spring does
Inside a top mount multiport, the diverter key has to press firmly against the seat plate so each port is sealed off from the others. The spring supplies that pressure. When it weakens or breaks, the key floats and water crosses between ports, which usually shows up as dirty water returning to the pool after a backwash, or as a slow loss to waste while filtering.
Fitting it
The spring sits under the valve cover with the key assembly, so the valve has to come apart to reach it. Since you are already there, it is worth inspecting the cover o-ring and the seat gasket and replacing them in the same visit.
