This is the genuine Sta-Rite valve shaft O-ring, part 14971-SM10E10. It seals the shaft that the multiport handle turns, where that shaft passes out through the top of the valve.
The leak it fixes
A multiport valve has two places that commonly weep. Water coming out of the waste line when the valve is set to filter is the spider gasket. Water appearing on top of the valve around the handle is this O-ring. It is the only seal in the valve that has to stay tight while a part is moving, so it wears from use as much as from age, and once it hardens it stops following the shaft.
