The HydroTools 9228 is a soft top penguin floating thermometer for pools and spas, from the Thermanimals line of float designs. It reads in Fahrenheit and Celsius.

What it is for

It floats on the surface and gives you the water temperature at a glance, without leaning over the edge with a handheld probe. The dual scale means nobody has to do the conversion.

Keeping hold of it

There is an eyelet on the float for fastening a tether cord, which is how a floating thermometer gets retrieved without wading in after it. Tied off at the ladder or a rail, it stays where you can reach it.

Why the reading is useful

Water temperature is not only about comfort. Warm water burns through sanitizer faster and gives algae a head start, so a pool running warmer than usual is a pool that needs testing more often.
