What it does

A backwash valve puts filtering and backwashing on a single handle. Instead of opening and closing a bank of manual valves in the right order, you turn one lever to reverse the flow through the filter and send the dirty water to waste, then turn it back.

The union matters

The valve connects through a union. That means it can be unthreaded and taken off the system for service, or replaced outright, without cutting into the plumbing and gluing a new run of pipe.
