The Raypak 003898F is the genuine natural gas combination valve in the 1/2 inch size, listed for the Raypak model 53, 53A and 406A millivolt pool heaters.

What a combination valve does

It is called a combination valve because it does several jobs in one body: manual shutoff, pilot gas supply, safety shutoff and main burner gas control. On a millivolt heater the valve also holds the circuit that the thermocouple energizes, which is why a failing valve can look like a pilot problem, a thermostat problem or an ignition problem depending on how it fails.

Getting the right one

Gas valves are specific to the fuel and the connection size. This is the natural gas valve at 1/2 inch, and a propane heater needs its own part. Check the rating plate on the heater for both the model and the fuel before ordering.

Installation

Replacing a gas valve means breaking a live gas connection and leak testing the result. That is licensed work. Have a qualified gas technician fit it and verify the pilot, the safety circuit and the main burner before the heater goes back into service.

Will this work on propane?
No. It is the natural gas valve. A propane heater takes a different valve.
Which heaters is it listed for?
The Raypak model 53, 53A and 406A millivolt pool heaters, in the 1/2 inch size.
What does a combination valve do?
It combines the manual shutoff, the pilot gas supply and the main burner gas control in a single body, which is why replacing it restores several functions at once.
Can I fit it myself?
Gas valve replacement and the leak test that follows it should be done by a licensed gas technician. It is not a homeowner repair.
