Product details
The Spears 437-292 is a reducer bushing, 2-1/2 inch by 2 inch, in the SPxS pattern. It is the fitting that takes a 2-1/2 inch socket down to 2 inch pipe in a single glued joint.
Reading the pattern
SPxS is spigot by socket. The outside of the large end is a spigot, sized to glue straight into a 2-1/2 inch socket, and the inside is a 2 inch socket that takes 2 inch pipe. That is what separates it from a reducing coupling, which needs a stub of 2-1/2 inch pipe between it and whatever it is joining.
Where it turns up
Mostly at the equipment pad, where a pump or filter port is one size and the pipe already in the ground is another. Both ends are solvent welded, so prime and cement as normal and let the joint cure before the system sees pressure.
