The job it does
The faceplate clamps against the wall and the gasket is what actually makes that joint watertight. It is a part nobody thinks about until it fails, and when it does the water does not come out anywhere visible. It goes behind the wall, which is why a leak at the skimmer throat is one of the more frustrating things to track down.
Replace it on principle
Any time the faceplate comes off, put a new gasket in. The old one has spent years compressed to the shape of that joint and will not seal properly a second time. Tighten the faceplate screws evenly and in a cross pattern so the gasket compresses uniformly rather than pinching at one corner.
