Why unions get replaced
The union is the joint that lets you take a pump out without cutting into the plumbing. It also takes the strain every time somebody tightens the nut, so the threads crack, the collar splits, and the o-ring flattens and starts to weep. A union that leaks on the suction side pulls air, and a pump that pulls air loses prime.
