Serial number first
Polaris changed this ring partway through production. The number on the serial plate decides which one your pump takes, so check it before ordering rather than going by the look of the old ring, which will have deformed in service.
What a worn ring looks like
Rings flatten, harden and split with heat and time. The symptom is a drip at the joint, or an air leak that makes the pump noisy and unreliable. Neither improves with tightening.
The right time to change it
It costs very little and it is already exposed whenever the wet end is open, so replace it as a matter of course during a shaft seal or impeller job rather than putting an aged ring back in.
