What it does
The faceplate is the trim ring around the skimmer opening. It squares up the throat, closes the gap between the skimmer body and the wall or deck, and gives the screws something solid to pull against. When it goes, the opening looks ragged and the screws no longer hold, which is usually where the trouble starts on an older skimmer.
