Square, not round
The groove in these pumps is cut for a square cross section. A round o-ring of similar diameter will sit proud, roll under load, and never seal properly, so it is worth ordering the correct part rather than substituting from a drawer of assorted rings.

What it does
The diffuser sits over the impeller and turns velocity into pressure. This ring seals it to the housing so all the flow is forced through the impeller eye. When it hardens and flattens, water bypasses the impeller, and the pump loses head while the motor sounds exactly as it always has.
Fitting
Clean the groove, fit the new ring dry into a clean seat, and give it a thin film of silicone o-ring lubricant so it stays put as the pump goes back together.
