What a square ring does
A square section ring seats flat in its groove and holds its position under clamping load. That gives a wide, even contact face at the seal plate joint. Over seasons the rubber hardens and takes a set, and the joint starts to weep. A fresh ring restores the seal.
When to fit it
The seal plate has to be separated from the volute to reach the shaft seal, so a pump that is already apart for a seal change is the natural moment to renew this ring rather than reuse a compressed one.
