What it seals
The strainer pot in front of a pump runs under suction, not pressure, so any gap in the lid seal pulls air in rather than pushing water out. That air collects in the trap, the pump loses its prime, and the whole system moves less water while the seal runs dry. A flattened, cracked or shrunken lid O-ring is the usual reason.
Fitting it
Take the old ring out, clean the groove and the underside of the lid, and set the new one in with a silicone based O-ring lubricant. The lubricant matters more than it sounds: it helps the ring seat evenly and keeps it from rolling or tearing the next time the lid comes off.
